Competitive softball evaluations

Softball families,

Please read this entire email carefully – so much information, and worthwhile for both you and your player to understand.

·   IMPORTANT: All players must be registered with the league prior to tryouts. If you have not registered for the 2024 season, do so HERE.* If your player attended the August 2023 evals, only ONE date is necessary for this round. If they did not attend in August, we ask that they attend BOTH eval dates this time around.

*Players need to reside within the Middleton Cross Plains School District boundaries to be eligible for MBSC teams.*

Timelines/deadlines:

·    Please sign up your player as soon as possible for an evaluation time slot(s). The very latest you can sign-up for an evaluation time-slot is noon on Friday, March 2nd. But, for our planning (and sanity!) the sooner the better – please and thank you!

·    Parent meeting at 7pm on Wednesday February 28th, 2024. Put this date and time in your calendar! We will send a Zoom link the afternoon of February 28th via Sign Up Genius email to everyone who is signed-up for an evaluation time-slot. The parent meeting will provide an overview of the competitive and recreational leagues, time commitment, and answer any questions you might have. Considering we’re doing one Zoom for all age levels, don’t hesitate to email Anne Esser esseranne@ymail.com  with your questions beforehand.

Eval Dates:

·       Sunday, March 3: hitting and fielding for each age groups 10U-14U (exact times in the sign-up links below)

·       Friday, March 8: hitting and fielding for age group 14U ONLY 6-7pm

·       Saturday, March 9: hitting and fielding age groups 10U & 12U (exact times in the sign-up links below)

·       We ask that you arrive promptly on time, check in time is built in to slot and suggest that you wait in the parking lot during the evaluation to help keep things moving and ensure we don’t have players standing around after their evaluation waiting for a ride.

How to pick the right sign-up age group for your player:

·    10U if your player was born after September 1st, 2012

·    12U if your player was born between September 1st, 2010- August 31st, 2012

·    14U if your player was born between September 1st, 2008-August 31st, 2010

Steps you need to follow:

1.  Register your player for the season if you haven’t already – players must be registered before signing-up for an evaluation timeslot: https://www.mbscwi.com/registration

2.  Sign up your player for one slot at the correct age-level hitting and fielding evaluation if she participated in the August eval; we recommend two total slots (one each day) if she wasn’t evaluated in August (see the section above “How to pick the right sign-up age group for your player”). If you have any questions after reading that please contact esseranne@ymail.com before signing up your player.

*note: we won’t be evaluating players for pitching or catching at this time because those scores aren’t used for team placement. Once teams are formed, coaches use practice time to evaluate what pitchers and catchers are game ready.

Where:

Tryouts will be held at the Indoor Practice Facility at Firefighters Park

What to bring:

·    For the hitting/fielding evaluation: players should bring tennis shoes, a glove, batting helmet with face cage, fielder’s mask, and bat if you have them. No cleats allowed. If you don’t have any of these items, please email Anne Esser esseranne@ymail.com  so we have the right item(s) ready for your player.

What to expect after evaluations:

·    We will follow up approximately a week after the final evaluation date with a competitive team offer or a referral to an MBSC rec team.

·    If your daughter accepts a competitive team offer, you will be required to pay an additional fee (on top of the base fee you paid as part of registration) to cover the cost of travel tournaments and other competitive-specific costs. Fees will range from roughly $150-$300, depending on the team. Payment details will be provided to all who accept team offers.

A special shout-out to Rich O'Connor for organizing the evaluation logistics, and all of the volunteers who will help these evaluations run smoothly and safely - thank you all! These evals would never be possible without so many hands on deck. You are appreciated!

Thank you for reading to the end! We appreciate it, and strive to keep our families in the know with as much info as possible.

If you have any questions, please contact Anne Esser, esseranne@ymail.com.

Thank you!

Anne Esser, MBSC Competitive Softball Director
