Over the past 10 years I have had the unique opportunity to watch shy, but eager to learn, kindergartners turn in to Middleton High School Varsity Softball stand-outs. I have also had the opportunity to work side by side with many wonderful people, both part of the Middleton Baseball Softball Commission and the Greater Dane Recreational Softball League. I have also met many wonderful parents, umpires and coaches. This job gave me the joy of seeing that what we do, does matter.
I am surprised at how quickly 10 years has gone by. With that said, I have come to the realization that it is time for me to step aside and open the door to someone with new energy and ideas. My hope is to have someone work with me this season (unless that is not needed) to make the transition smooth and simple. My plan is to stay involved, in the program, as long as I am needed.
While I have been the director of the Recreational Softball Program I have overseen all ages/programs from K-12th grade; on average about 120 players. However, it does not have to continue like this. Two people may find this position easier to manage. The typical requirements for the Rec. Director are to attend monthly commission meetings, set up budgets for the rec. programs, order uniforms , equipment, set up teams, find coaches, communicate with other community directors for scheduling games, communicate with field scheduler and umpire coordinator to ensure that season schedules are ready by the middles of May, assist with competitive player tryouts. Although this may seem overwhelming, dividing up duties has started to happen and can continue to happen if that is the next directors wish. Some of the requirements, listed above, require in person communication but many can be done through email. Overwhelming as it may sound, this is also one of the most rewarding volunteer positions I have the pleasure of being a part of.
